The Spirit of Halloween

The Cosmos never put me on the simple path. When faced with the Choose Your Own Adventure path, my options are either the easy and clean path or the long winding complicated path. I always end up on the long complicated hot-messy path. It is getting to the point that I can't help but wonder if the Watcher is looking down at me and just giggling in delight.

Let's take Halloween for example. One of my favorite holidays, Halloween, is the premier holiday full of super good candy and exciting costumes for grown folks to run around in. Well, the guys get really cool costumes. Women get 62 variations of slut. Now here's the thing, I am completely comfortable being sexy. I am a woman of a certain age and I embrace my body and can wear a body con dress like it is nobodies business. However, I am no longer 20 and the whole slutty viking look is just not applicable. I want cool costumes, and since there has yet to be a full line up of She-Ra costumes, I have excitedly met my match with Jem and the Holograms.

Thanks to the Spirit Halloween store and Hasbro, dorkettes everywhere can purchase exclusive Jem and the Holograms costumes! Up for grabs is Jem, Synergy, and Pizzazz. There are costumes, wigs, and a blow up guitar, all of which are 25% off! So hurry to your local Spirit Halloween store and get your Jem stuff!

Back to that complicated winding road my life is always on, well I have been through some mess to get a Pizzazz costume. (Yes, I will be going as Pizzazz this Halloween. Somewhere inside me lives a mega bitch that just likes to get out every now and then.) Anyways so last week I purchased a medium sized costume, which sort of fit. It was really short and really tight. Also having thrown the receipt away I was up a creek in an ill fitted Pizzazz costume that I couldn't return.

So I went on the hunt for a new size. After calling and calling the Spirit stores for a large, I finally found one yesterday. After asking for the item to be put on hold, I rushed after work to get it. Well once I got home I found a huge hole in the costume. And a big "Final Sale" on the receipt. Really? All I wanted was to have a nice Pizzazz costume so that I could look like one of my favorite cartoon villains and have multiple clueless people ask who I am for Halloween. Is that so much to ask?

Well I went back, purely expecting the worst. I was ready for them to tell me I could not switch it for a hole-less one. All I cold think of was the dread of having to wear a costume that someone tried on and busted. However the manager was very understanding and actually a fan of Jem herself! It was wonderful! I got to switch the costume for a non-busted Pizzazz costume and I got to talk to a fellow fan of Jem. We talked about the old dolls. I then informed her of the new dolls. She even gave me some inside scoop that the Jem costumes have actually been pretty popular, and not just with folks who loved Jem back then. The manager told me that there have been some parents coming in and getting the smaller sized costumes for their children because they have shown the old cartoon episodes to a whole new generation!

I love hearing things like that, it is just so cool! I think Hasbro better know about the gold mine they have been sitting on for the last 20 odd years. New collector dolls are nice, and costumes are icing on the cake. But I really hope Hasbro has bigger plans for Jem and the Holograms. I think this could be such a fun thing! Now we just need to work on that She-Ra cartoon. For now just look at some images of the cool Pizzazz costume and click here for more information on the Jem costumes at Spirit! They are truly outrageous.

    1. Thank you! I am hoping to take some fun pictures too. My friend's birthday is on Halloween, so we are going to this party on the weekend and I will just die if someone is dressed as Jem. It will make for a great photo!

  2. Cool, Halloween ist still not very popular in Europe, only between the youngest people who do not miss one chance to organize a party. I always thought you have to find a disguise of a monster, zombie or something like that. The only time I was on a Halloween party, I painted my face white/grey, wore a jacket and tall hat and carried a 1,5 meters high wooden Axe in the hand, I was a mixture between Frankenstein and an executioner. Ah, I also had and a plastic head with hair on the other hand.

I wonder if people would recognise you as Pizzazz, as you say, you'll have to explain many clueless people who you are.

    1. Yeah, Halloween is a really big deal in the U.S. Sometimes it can be a bit much, but it is fun. I probably wouldn't celebrate it as much as I do if it weren't for my friend having a birthday on Halloween.

And one of the goals is to wear a costume that disguises you, but there has also been a trend in the last few decades where people dress up like big events in pop culture. Of course, I'm really only in it for the candy. lol

I also really hope people know who I will be dressed as. It will be a shame if people are clueless about that stuff.

  4. My attitude about Halloween = same as the attitude the Vampires on Buffy had about it-everyday is Halloween for someone like me therefore Halloween itself is just for the poseur creatures of the night. And I worked at a costume shop so any affection I had for Halloween took a real beating then-
but I did love it when I was a child though, and I was going to write a column for the website I occasionally write for about Poncho costumes. Remember those? There would be like a plastic face mask of the Frankenstein monster with a string to put it on with, and then a poncho that you were supposed to wear that said the name FRANKENSTEIN in big letters and had a picture of him on it. I always thought those were hilarious because I would imagine the monster wearing that in the movie. Frankenstein wearing a shirt with his name on it an picture of himself. Always made me giggle. Anyway I got saddled with TWO papers I had to write for school and a presentation all at the same time and didn't get to do the column. :(
But maybe I'll just make a monster movie someday where the monster wears a poncho with his name on it! Note to self: do that.
Also I think you will be very happy with a scene in this weeks Arrow where Katie Cassidy gives us a little glimpse of her bad ass side that could be an indication of her future canary-ness! she doesn't go all costumey or anything but she definitely proves tougher than she has seemed so far on the show. And at the end of the scene I could swear I saw a little blonde in her hair! (though maybe I just wanted to see that and hallucinated it.)
-and opposite of that, hilariously, I was reading a Green Arrow comic from 1960 that you simply have got to read if you ever get the chance. It introduces the character of Miss Arrowette!! And if you were upset about Wonder woman as a secretary in the forties this early 60's comic should mortify you. She has a lotion arrow! And a hair net arrow and like make up and powder puff arrows. She of course she gets captured but makes sure to put on strong perfume to lead Green Arrow and Speedy to the scene where they can rescue her and remind her that "crime fighting is a mans job!" -haha-but actually she kept on coming back in later issues and interfering in the manly world of crime fighting. She was pretty cute though-I will have to see if they retconned her into a more modern less sexist version in the post Silver Age. Or maybe she has a blog of her own called "Diary of an Arrowette"!

    1. Well that poncho sounds cool! I really like that. And OMG I was so excited to see Katie Cassidy kick some butt! I also could have sworn I saw that blonde in her hair too, so you are not alone! I really hope they bring Canary out soon! And Green Arrowette sounds like a total fun mess. As eye rolling as that stuff can be, sometimes it can be funny like, "That was really a story?" And I would die if there was a Diary of Arrowette. I would love that.

    2. haha-yeah-when she turned around after kicking that pussy club owners ass I SWEAR I saw some blonde in that hair!!
And here is a funny male-dork story that makes me sound like a big loser, sometimes on the weekend I go to my moms house and then we will go out to eat at Friendlies cuz I luv Friendlies (and there is no Big Boy anymore -but if there was I would go there!) and right next to the Friendlies there is a Barne's and Noble (there used to be a Border's there too but sadly it went the way of the Dodo bird) anyway, whenever I go eat there with her I totally make us go to the Barne's and Noble becuz they have all the comics I cant find at the grocery store(my mom doesn't live by any comic shops -so when I go to her place I have to buy comics like I did when I was a kid -at the rack at the grocery store. And my apartment by where I go to school is not close to any comic shops either-I have to drive to Cleveland or Strongsville to find a good geek shop.)I quite often force us to go to the bookstore just to buy these comics I don't normally find -but this week I scooped up like over twenty bucks worth of comics and also a copy of "Scary Monsters" magazine which is sort of like "Famous Monsters of Filmland" was back in the 60's, it's like the last remaining good monster mag that is about the classic monster movies and the 50's -60's cheezy monster movies that I love-so anyway, the funny thing is I felt like I was a little dorky kid again, cuz I was gonna buy all these comics and then I picked up the magazine(which is like nine dollars) and my mom was like giving me shit about spending all that money on that stuff!haha I felt twelve-even though it was my money she was still thinking I could spend it on something better!haha-but I reminded her that there are way worse things you can spend money on than reading material!
But I swear-in addition to the Mag, I bought like Swamp Thing, Justice League 0 and the new one with Cheetah, and the new Wonder Woman-and the Spike :In a Dark Place (Buffy Spin Off)-but in all fairness, where am I gonna find all those titles? I might as well buy them when I can!Where do you buy your comics?
P.S I saw there is a new Adora search for honor-can't wait to read it!

    3. Well I miss Big Boy! Those were the best burgers! I hate that they are no longer around. And I love your story! I too miss Borders, but sometimes I do go to Barnes and Noble for comics that I may have missed at my comic store. It is nice. And I like that your mom was reacting like that. That is such a typical mom reaction. lol My mom swears she is going to always put me on some episode of Hoarders becaue she firmly believes I have a problem. But it sounds like you got some really cool loot! I'm glad you got some good stuff. And I really hope you enjoy the latest Adora's Search for Honor! Hope all is well.

  5. Rock on that you are gonna be Pizzazz, and I too hope you post some pics in constume! It's great that you were able to exchange your torn costume too. Hang onto the smaller size if you can - if these aren't released again next year you may have a cool Jem collectible on your hands..

    1. Well... the night was interesting to say the least. I will be posting about it soon. A mess. a total mess. But that is a good idea about hanging onto the smaller size. Though I do hope that they can expand upon the costumes next year. I would really enjoy that.
