Dorkette Night Out! The Art of Storytelling: A Pole Dance Kickoff event

I'm not always stalking the aisles at Toysrus or spending nights washing toys in the Spa Sink. Every now and then I do get out and have, ya know, a social life. Read on for my night out at The Art of Storytelling: A Pole Dance Kickoff event hosted by Melee on the Bayou.

A couple weekends ago I had the joy of going out with some friends to support and celebrate our friend Patrick as he performed in a doubles pole performance and a group ensemble performance as well. You may recall that Patrick and his dance partner Lisa recently became the Doubles Pole Champions from the 2013 Capital of Texas Pole Championship Competition, you can view that performance right here. I was very proud of my friend, if not saddened by my absence at such a momentous occasion. So, I was more than ready to attend The Art of Storytelling and watch him do his thing!

This wasn't a competition, it was more of a showcase. Each dancer was going to perform to a song while telling a story. I love stuff like this. The first performer came out and danced to a little ditty called Poison Ivy. That's right, her story was about the famed villainess Poison Ivy from the world of DC. She had the Poison Ivy hair and a Poison Ivy two-piece, the whole thing was amazing. From that moment on I knew this was going to be a fun night. Bonus points for Crystal Belcher and Shay Jones. They both emceed the night and they were so funny. They really knew how to work the crowd and helped frame the night.

The performances were out of control amazing. I know that when most people think of pole dancing their minds immediately go to seedy strip clubs or rich reality show socialite moms wanting to keep it tight, and those images may be true, however it isn't always true. Each and every performer that did their thing on stage brought a whole new image and idea for what it means to pole dance. I was thoroughly immersed in their stories and the talent it takes to be involved in pole fitness. There is balance, choreography, dance, and gymnastic skills to name just a few of the varied talents. This is a sport with so much beauty and strength involved.

On a side note, I can't dance like these women. I only really know how to "ho" dance, and my "ho" dancing looks more like Britney Spears having a mini meltdown. I look like a spaz, but watching these wonderful performers dance, it was just so awesome and motivating. There was one performer from Australia, her name is Cleo "the Hurricane" and my goodness she gave it her all and killed it. All while dancing to some 80's heavy metal. You gotta love that.

But the highlight of the night for me was watching Patrick and his dance partner Lisa. Their story had a 50 Shades of Grey theme to it, and the audience loved every second of it. I can't upload the video directly on here, but here is the YouTube link to their performance.

It was hot, right? My goodness! I think for me, one of the greatest things about this is watching my friend set his mind to something and seeing where the journey takes him. I love to support people and their dreams. I think that is one of the most important things we can do for each other. What started out as some exercise classes has now turned into him performing at showcase events and of course winning a title back in April! I'm just beyond proud of him.

So before I start sounding like a mom, let me also share with you another video from a group dance Patrick was involved in later on that night. I like to think that I have some of the best most dorkiest readers in the world, so I know you will all appreciate this video. It combines two things that are always cool, 80's aerobics and zombies.

Is this not the cutest thing ever? I just can't help but smile when I see this video. It is everything, just everything. The only thing missing is She-Ra or Jem. I'm just sayin.

The night was just a great amount of fun. Especially for an old broad like me that doesn't get out and do much. I'm really proud of my friend for being so fearless and setting his mind to some extraordinary feats! Enjoy the videos and for more information, head over to Houston Pole Melee and like them on Facebook.

I'm going to try and post more this week, but I am also knee deep in the process of setting up a massive garage sale at my parent's house. Oh if you all only knew half the stuff my brother and I have stumbled upon. There are scandals living in my parent's attics. Scandals. Anyways, I hope you are all doing well!

  1. That zombie aerobics video was awesome! I love the fringe-y nature of this competition! It really does take some talent, hard work, and creativity.

  2. I love how you support and care for your friend, but I must say, this is not the first instance of Zombie Aerobics. In fact I am surprised that you, as a Joe Bob Briggs fan, haven't heard of the zombie aerobic gold standard: "Linea Quigley's Horror Workout".

    1. Oh I know this isn't the first instance of zombie aerobics. I do recall Linea's Horror Workout. It was a cute movie. I liked her hair a lot. I haven't seen that movie in ages though. I need to see if it is on Netflix. I feel like there have been other instances of zombie aerobics, I just can't actively recall them.
